Birthday | Joey's 1st Birthday Cake Smash & Splash

He smashed and Splashed in honor of his first birthday!

Joey was such a treat to photograph at his 1st birthday Toy Story Smash & Splash! This was the last session I did before the COVID-19 Quarantine began, which seems like forever ago! Between his sweet smile, big blue eyes, and beautiful red locks, I took so many photos!! He was so calm and reserved, with his only cries coming when it was time to get out of the tub. I think that while he loved eating and smashing his cake, he loved his bubble bath even more!! Even though he was reserved, when we did get those adorable dimpled smiles. Happy 1st Birthday, little Joey! To infinity and beyond!

Travel | Scotland

“I always feel that when I come to Edinburgh, in many ways I am coming home.” - Alan Rickman

Last December, my husband and I had the opportunity to travel to Scotland, without the kids!! And, while I LOVE taking our kids on trips (no matter how challenging), it was such a special treat to be able to go with just the two of us. We were on our own schedule, not the kids’, we got to stay up late, sleep in, walk miles a day with only minimal complaining, and do whatever we wanted to do! We even enjoyed simple things like sitting in silence or getting to try new and exciting foods without someone wanting chicken nuggets (I mean, we tried haggis and neeps and tatties, (mashed turnips and potatoes) which were actually quite delicious!). It was amazing!! And we got to spend all this one-on-one time without little people stealing our attention away, for FIVE DAYS!! Shout out to our amazing parents and siblings who split the time watching our boys while we were away! You all are the real heroes.

As a photographer, this was my first international trip with my DSLR and I was itching to get grand and breathtaking photos of the city, and let me tell you, Scotland did NOT disappoint!! Because we went in the Winter, the sun rose late and set early (read: it was only light outside from 8:30am till 4:00pm - let that sink in), which wasn’t always fun because we had limited light. BUUUTTT when the sun was out, it was always low in the sky, which basically meant I had “golden hour” all day!!! That was a dream!! (If you can’t tell by my exclamation points, I was super excited!)

I also loved it because it challenged me to get outside my comfort zone when it came to the subject of my photographs. Since I photograph people, I’ve never really focused on architecture as the main subject before, so that was a fun aspect of the trip! You can’t move buildings into better light like you can with people, so I had to make the situation work for me, and look for opportunities to take pictures that represented my style.

Looking back, it was impossible to know at that time that in just a few short months we would be quarantined in our home, with no idea when we would even be able to travel again; it somehow makes going through these photos even sweeter knowing things were much less stressful then. Please enjoy these photos from our trip to Scotland! Please also note that this is definitely not ALL the pictures we took, but these are some of my favorites! I’ll include some locations and fun tidbits throughout the post!

2020-09-26_0001.jpg

I think this picture (above) was one of my top 5 favorites from the trip because of that beautiful, glowy foreground and that glowy light on the buildings! Also, YES, that is snow on the ground! This Miami gal was enchanted!

Since it was December, there was already some Christmas decor all over (and even a nighttime, multi-block Christmas festival!!) In the photo above/right, you can see purple lights hanging from the building!

2020-09-26_0006.jpg

The texture on all these buildings lended to some beautiful black + white images!!

2020-09-26_0009.jpg

This was a crazy hike up Arthur’s Seat, where you could see all of Edinburgh below! It was so cold, but so beautiful! I didn’t make it all the way up, but my husband did!

2020-09-26_0011.jpg

This is Glencoe! We were only there for 5 minutes on our way to Loch Ness on a tour, but this was one of my FAVORITE spots on the trip! It was so beautiful and expansive and calming, and it made me feel so small. I wish we could have spent the whole day there, exploring and basking in its beauty! Even though we didn’t get to see it when it is lush and green, it was still so impressive.

2020-09-26_0014.jpg

On the right is the Edinburgh Castle! You can tell how crazy the elevation changes are even just within the city!

2020-09-26_0018.jpg

This is the Balmoral Hotel! If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is where J.K. Rowling wrote the very last chapters of the Harry Potter series! She lives in Edinburgh, so she wrote most of the books at different places around the city, and was even inspired by the city itself for places and people in the book! There’s too much to write here, but basically it’s a lot!

2020-09-26_0022.jpg
IMG_0126 copy.jpg

I know it’s a little silly, but the lighting on this building is so glowy and glorious!! This is the light I want all my pictures to be in!

This little village was called Dean’s Village; it was the last stop in our trip, and my husband’s favorite spot. There is a little river running through the neighborhood that was so relaxing and beautiful! We made it right after sunset after trying to get there all day; we kept getting sidetracked!

I hope you enjoyed these few photos from our trip! I can’t wait to travel again!! I’m trying to convince my husband to take us to Paris in honor of my 30th birthday, but with COVID, who knows when that will even be! Where is the most fun or most beautiful place you’ve traveled?

Cheers,
Aubrey

Family | The Deo Family

The Deo Family are our Zoo buddies!

I met Amanda and her oldest daughter last year at one of our favorite places: the Zoo! This was while baby girl was still in Mama’s belly! Since COVID has halted our Zoo trips together for the time being, I was SO excited to see Amanda and her sweet family! With two boys of my own, photographing her little girls was such a fun experience! We had so much fun at the beach exploring, playing in the water, and capturing this sweet family’s love for one another. Enjoy the Deo Family portraits!

Birthday | Eva’s 1st Birthday

She was as sweet as she is cute!

With her sweet smile and diva personality, Eva was so fun to photograph! Her mom absolutely nailed her outfits (Eva has better style than I do!). We sang Itsy Bitsy Spider and played peekaboo; her smiles took some coaxing (like most 1-year olds), but when we caught them they were so beautiful! Enjoy Eva’s 1st Birthday portraits with her family!

Birthday | Oliver’s 5th Birthday

Oliver is the fanciest 5-year old!

We celebrated Oliver turning the big FIVE at the best place - the beach!! He has the sweetest smile, and was so excellent at laughing for the camera! I wish my kids listened this well when I took their photos, haha! I’ve known Oliver since he was a baby, and it blows my mind that he’s already 5 years old. I’m so excited to document more of his birthdays in the years to come. Enjoy Oliver’s fancy birthday portraits with his blue balloon!

30 Fun Facts about Aubrey

This week was my 30th Birthday!

In honor of turning the big 3-0, I wanted to share 30 Fun Facts about me! Some are purely factual, and others are silly; some are short, while others might require some explanation; but all are FUN!! Enjoy these fun facts (shared in no particular order)! Shoutout to my wonderful husband for snapping these photos for me on my birthday!!

2020-11-03_0010.jpeg

1. My Mom and I share the same middle name: Jean!

2. I have a Master’s degree in Library Science! I absolutely loved my classes; I mean, I had one class all about storytelling! I’ve also worked in 3 different libraries!

3. My favorite literary genre is probably middle grade fiction; my most recent favorite was The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart about genius kids who save the world from being brainwashed!

4. My favorite book of the Bible is James; I am committed to memorizing the entire book, but have only learned the first chapter so far.

5. I went to Florida State University! I lived in Tallahassee for 6 years. Go Noles!!

6. I’ve broken both of my wrists from sports! My right wrist was broken in middle school from a rollerblading fall, and my left wrist was broken in college from a volleyball spike straight to the wrist.

7. I’ve been dyeing my hair for a few years now. It started out as black, then blonde ombré, to full blonde, to dark purple, and now pink!

8. I’ve traveled to 8 different countries! Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Haiti, Ireland, Italy, & Scotland.

9. My favorite Marvel superhero is Thor, with Ant Man as a close second!

10. My favorite TV show of all time is Bones! My brother introduced it to me when I was in college. He told me that he thought I might like it, and he was right! Thanks, Bill!!

2020-11-03_0007.jpeg

11. On road trips, I ALWAYS fall asleep if I’m not driving. I get carsick pretty easily, so I can’t do too much else. My husband is the exact opposite!

12. When we were first married and living in Tallahassee, we would drive home to visit every few months. I worked at the children’s library on campus, so one year I checked out the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone audiobook. Ever since then we listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks on EVERY road trip. They are so entertaining, and give the driver something to do to ease boredom. Jim Dale does THE BEST job of narrating! We still haven’t finished one full book, though, because we always jump around!

13. I am a “Christmas before Thanksgiving” person! I didn’t use to be, but ever since having kids, I try to start as early as possible! As soon as my birthday hits, I’m calling Home Depot every few days to see when their trees are ready for purchase!

14. My favorite Christmas song is “O Holy Night.”

15. My favorite Christmas tradition is watching Christmas movies (especially Hallmark ones)! The cheesier, the better! My favorite last year was about a Christmas ghost.

16. I am always FREEZING; the only exception was during my pregnancies.

17. My favorite color changes as I change; it used be orange, then yellow, and now it’s light pink/rose gold (can you tell?).

18. If I could only wear one outfit for the rest of my life it would be black leggings and a black, flowy workout top. I literally live in that outfit right now!

19. I hate wearing shoes. I love a cute pair, but I would rather be barefoot all. the. time!

20. I use a Bullet Journal that houses everything, from calendars and to-dos, to workouts and business stuff! I swear by mine, and even got my husband on-board! If you’re a visual person, you should definitely try it out for organizing your life!

2020-11-03_0009.jpeg

21. I am currently homeschooling my Kindergartener! My Bachelors is in Elementary Education, so at least I’m putting it to some use.

22. I lead worship 2-3 times a month at my church! I’m not the best singer, but I love being able to use what talent I do have for the Lord.

23. My favorite type of food is Mexican food; I could eat tacos every. single. day. and never get tired of it (although my stomach might not appreciate that!).

24. I love doing yoga! It’s probably my favorite type of exercise; I use FitOn for my yoga practices, and they are SO good!

25. I shoot with Canon, just like my Dad! He was the “embarrassing Photo Dad” and now I’m the “embarrassing Photo Mom!”

26. My favorite place that I’ve traveled to so far is Scotland!! My husband and I went last December and it was a dream!! Blog post coming soon with some favorite photos!

27. One of my dreams is to live abroad. I’m not sure where, or when, this would happen, but I definitely want it to happen, even if it’s only for a short time!

28. I currently have 40,000 pictures on my phone!! Yikes!

29. I love Disney, but I would choose Universal over Disney any day!

30. I am an Enneagram 9, and my love language is Words of Affirmation!

Birthday | Joshua's 2nd Birthday

Joshua loves Dinos, Books, and the Beach!

We took Joshua’s 2nd Birthday Portraits at the beach, and he had a blast! Whether it was kicking up sand, dipping his toes in the water, or running up and down the beach chasing birds, he explored and played to his heart’s content! In between his bouts of play we were able to snap his formal portraits. That is always the goal of your session: to capture the magic, but to also let them be kids! I want to capture the smiles and joy, the childhood wonder. We even went to a second beach since we were all having such a fun time! Enjoy these photos from Joshua’s 2nd Birthday session!

Wedding Portraits | Kassandra + Rudy

It was intimate and beautiful, and you could see the joy and love on their faces.

COVID couldn’t stop these two from celebrating their love! They got married in an intimate ceremony in their home church, surrounded by family. I just couldn’t get over how they looked at one another, their eyes filled with love and adoration. I had SO much fun photographing their wedding portraits!! Kassandra has one of the most infections smiles, and the soft way Rudy looked at her, you could tell their love was deep. Enjoy these wedding portraits of these sweet NEWLYWEDS!

Milestone | Kassandra's College Graduation

All that hard work has paid off, because ladies and gentleman she is Done with her undergrad!

Kass’s hard work and dedication is such a sight to behold! She has worked so hard to finish off strong, and has had to endure more than most people have to contend with on their last leg of college undergrad. During this COVID-19 time, she has rocked the uncertainty and the tough classes and has finally gotten to the finish line!!

Kass is a light! She is one of the most beautiful people, inside and out, and five minutes with her you’re going to be laughing and smiling. I couldn’t stop smiling while editing her session because of her beautiful, infectious smile!! Congrats, girl, you are going to ROCK your Masters, too! Enjoy some of my favorites from Kassandra’s Grad session!

DIY | Children's Spring Portraits

Little boys smiling for Easter pictures

Is there anything cuter than boys in bowties?

I may be biased, but I think my boys in bowties are some of the cutest things on the planet! Since last year was my littlest’s first Easter, I took some “formal” Easter pictures of the boys together one morning and it was SO worth it! Of course I needed to take fancy, “staged” Easter/Spring pictures of the boys again this year! If you’re not able to get some studio portraits of your kids this year for Spring, here are a few tips to do it yourself at your home! I chose to do my Spring portraits with an Easter theme, but you can go many routes! I used what I already had from last year, otherwise I would have LOVED to buy bunches of tulips for their portraits! Bunnies, florals, baby chicks, eggs, and pastels are just a few ideas; the sky’s the limit!

I’ve included pictures from 2019 and 2020 so you can see my little boys grow!

1. Find a spot outside or inside with great natural light and a pleasing background

My favorite spot for pictures is in front of our backyard white fence! It doesn’t matter where, but there should be enough shade to block the sun from your kids’ faces and torsos. There shouldn’t be any “hotspots” of sunlight, especially on their faces. If you look at the 2019 pictures, you can see that I turned the boys to try to keep the bright hotspots at the back of their heads and not directly on their cute faces.

2. Set the scene

Get them dressed up! Just like when you would get studio portraits, dress them up in “fancy” attire; my favorite outfits include bowties for my boys! Just make sure it is comfortable enough that they won’t be too fidgety.

To get my littlest to stay in one place, I like to put down a light-colored sheet or blanket (so it reflects clean light onto their faces) and have them sit during their portraits. If your kids can stand still, then have at it! Sometimes I can get my littlest to stand still if I have my older one put his arm around him, but it’s hit or miss. Don’t force it! The goal is for them to cooperate! I like to keep my set-ups simple, so last year I only had an egg-filled basket; this worked out well because my son was 7 months old at the time, and giving him something to hold helped keep him from crawling away! Set up however much or little you want! A cute letter board sign, some bunny ears, or their Easter baskets all make good props to include!

3. Don’t forget the bribes!

If you have kids like mine, it can take a bribe to get them to sit still and smile for the camera. If you want, you can have a bribe in hand to keep their attention! I like to have M&Ms or other small candies next to me, and I'll give them one every round of pictures to keep their attention going. If you don’t like going that route, have a favorite toy or something that lights up to get their attention focused where you need it. It’s also fun to “attack” them with a stuffed animal to get them to giggle, or to wear a silly hat, or to play peek-a-boo! You know your kids; be creative!

4. Guide them with prompts

Just like adults, kids don’t always know what to do in front of a camera besides smile and say Cheeeese, but we want a variety of pictures! Give your kids gentle prompts and commands throughout the shoot so that you can get those different shots. For example, have your kids give each other a hug (or do a group hug)! Have them look to whoever is the stinkiest (that gets a laugh!); have them wink at the camera, or try a new grin. See who can laugh the loudest or quietest, or see who can smile the biggest! You know what to say to get your kids to giggle or laugh! The goal is to get a variety of pictures of your kids and their personalities, all while leaving them with a positive experience. Make sure to get group pictures of your kids (all together, boys/girls) as well as individuals!

5. Don’t be afraid to do it in steps

It can be hard to do all of this if you’re doing it alone! Don’t be afraid to do it as long as your kids can stand it, and then come back another time to take more. I’ve stopped little sessions before with my kids when one of them just isn’t in the mood, and picked it back up another day! That’s one of the beautiful things about simple set ups is that you can set up/take down quickly! You don’t want them to hate the camera; you want them to know that THEY are more important than the pictures, and if today isn’t the day, then try again later.

BONUS: Print them out!

I am a HUGE HUGE advocate for printed pictures! In the boys’ room is a photo area where there are at least 50 pictures hanging and they LOVE it! The little one always loves to GASP and say “Baby!!” pointing to pictures of himself. Once you have your favorites, print them out and display them so they can be proud of how well they did! They might even ask you for more! Kids feel so good about themselves when they see themselves in pictures, and it’s a great way to relive these fond memories. Since I like to change out my kids’ pictures pretty regularly, I get them from the Snapfish app; you get 100 free prints a month, only paying shipping!

Final thoughts

I hope this little guide helps! It’s definitely not always easy, especially with your own kids, but no matter how “not great” you think your pictures turn out, THEY ARE GREAT! You’re documenting your kids as they are, and if that means some grumpy-faced pictures, then so be it! Just look at my pictures! They are definitely NOT smiling in every single one, but that’s how they were! The little one didn’t smile often at that age when he couldn’t see my face (since it was behind the camera) and the older one got bored! I couldn’t even get them both to smile in the same picture, and even have ones of the little one crying! But it’s fine! I still think they are the most adorable kids ever, and still love the pictures!! Give yourself a break and just do the best you can!

Birthday | Caleb's 4th Birthday

Paw Patrol, Forts, and Legos galore!

Caleb is a spunky and energetic little firecracker! He’s a smarty pants whose favorite thing to do is build! Whether it’s with magnatiles, LEGOs, or the big Fort with his Daddy, this bug loves everything having to do with with building. Not only does he love building, but also destroying to build back up again!

He loves to be active and would spend all his time outside (especially if he’s building or dropping cars down ramps!). I can’t wait to see how much he will grow and learn this next year! In celebration of his big day, we took his portraits at the beach! Enjoy these sweet photos!

Birthday | Mikayla's 10th Birthday

Mikayla’s nature is as sweet as the horses she rode!

I had the honor of documenting Mikayla’s 10th birthday celebration with some of her favorite things: her family, friends, and HORSES! She has been celebrating her birthday with horses for a few years now, and I think that is one of the coolest things! It was such a special way to mark her special day, and her love for them was evident in the confident and respectful way she interacted with them. Enjoy these photos of the birthday fun!

Fresh 48 | Maia

I met baby Maia during the most thankful time of the year!

I’m certain Maia’s family had no trouble finding things to be thankful for this year! Born around Thanksgiving, this sweet girl couldn’t wait to be in the arms of her doting parents, grandma, and big sister. In fact, it seemed that favorite thing was to be snuggled up with her family.

Maia, your family is so thankful to have you, and you are going to be so blessed by your family! Enjoy these photos of baby Maia and her lovely family.

Fresh 48 | Luke

The sweetest babe in the sweetest family!

Meeting baby Luke and his family was such an honor! I could feel the love and peace in the room from the minute I walked in. Being the second boy in the family, you could tell these parents were more than ready to handle double the trouble (although, those two boys being trouble seems unlikely!). Luke, you are already so loved and blessed by your big brother, parents, and grandparents.

Cake Smash | Hailey's 1st Birthday

Hailey is the most glamorous and dainty little girly girl!

From her pink tutu to her lavish pearls, she is the epitome of what a girly girl should be! While she wasn’t really into EATING her smash cake, she definitely loved PLAYING with it! Her favorite thing to do was to get icing all over her hands and clap as hard as she could. Even with a few tears, she was a perfect angel during her session. I love when babies really dig into the cake, and she was no exception, getting icing in her hair and all over her cute little feet!

Hailey girl, I can’t believe you’re almost one! Your parents love and adore you, and you are so blessed to have such a wonderful Mom and Dad. I’m so glad I could celebrate your almost- birthday with you, and document your sugary fun!

Birthday | Joshua's 1st Birthday

Their first year is the fastest and slowest year of your whole life.

I don’t know what it is about that first year of your baby’s life, whether it’s the long nights, lack of sleep, oodles of baby cuddles, or the innumerable feeding sessions, but it seems to both drag and fly by! It was no different with Joshua’s first year.

Joshua is a calm and loving little snuggle bug who is whip smart and so giggly! He waited until right before his birthday to finally start standing on his own and he is so proud! I can’t get enough of his sweet smile (with his 6 teeth!) and his chunky legs!

We went to the beach to document his first rotation around the sun, and it was perfect. Enjoy these photos of this sweetest little (now) toddler.

Cake Smash & Splash | Joshua's 1st Birthday

IT HAS BECOME A MODERN TRADITION TO CELEBRATE A CHILD’S FIRST BIRTHDAY WITH A CAKE SMASH.

If you haven’t already heard of or seen this celebration, it’s as simple as it sounds: allow your one-year-old to celebrate by giving him/her their very own cake to “smash” and eat in the messiest way they can. Every baby is different when it comes to this treat. Some love it instantly, while others absolutely hate the taste/texture and end up crying. Joshua was right in the middle of these two reactions. This session can also include a “splash” portion at the end, which cleans the babe in a fun and adorable way! Anything for cute photos, amiright?

If you’re concerned that baby won’t like the sweetness of the cake, you can give him a taste test the night before. It doesn’t have to be very much, just enough to try so that when you do the“official” one, baby is already more familiar and may dive right in.

As you’ll see from the pictures, he was very sedate in his non-smashing of the cake, and the icing was clearly the favorite. We ended with the “splash” portion of the session, and he loved being able to get in a little more play! Arguably, he seemed to enjoy the splashing more than the smashing!

Without further ado, enjoy Joshua’s Smash and Splash. Happy (almost) 1st Birthday!

Fresh 48 | Maya

Maya is small but mighty!

She was a very alert (and hungry!) baby for most of her session, but it was obvious she loved to be in Mama’s arms. She was confident and in charge of her session, even at one day new! She definitely let everyone around her know what she wanted, and it was so adorable to watch! It was also so wonderful to be able to witness her new role in her family as a new daughter and baby sister. While her older sister wasn’t quite sure what to do with this life-sized doll, I am confident these two will grow up to be the best of friends. Enjoy these photos of this adorable babe and her family.

Graduation | Jason's Kinder Graduation

Avengers, LEGOs, NERF guns, and Baseball.

At 6 years old, these are some of Jason’s favorite things! It’s hard to believe that this little man that I’ve held when he was so fresh and new is now entering the first grade, but I am so, so proud of all he has accomplished so far. He is smart, confident, and kind, and it was such a pleasure photographing this major accomplishment of his. Before we know it, he will be graduating middle school! But until then, be sure to check out his adventures with his family at T and P Next Door.
